Issues for Saanich
Where do candidates stand on environment and climate?
Saanich is the largest municipality in Greater Victoria, at 103.44 square kilometres, and the most populous on the Island. According to the 2021 Canadian census (conducted by Statistics Canada), Saanich had a population of 117,735, an increase of 3.1% over 2016.
Saanich Council declared a climate emergency in 2019. The municipality's most recent Official Community Plan, "Sustainable Saanich", was adopted in May of 2024. An updated Urban Forest Strategy and a Biodiversity Conservation Strategy were adopted in September 2024. In recognition, the Canadian Association of Municipal Administrators (CAMA) presented Saanich with the 2025 CAMA Environmental Leadership & Sustainability Award in the Over 100,000 Population Category.
Saanich conducts climate risk assessments on a regular basis to guide climate resilience actions. The most recent assessments have been used to inform development of the 2026 Saanich Climate Plan resilience actions, and are intended to inform development of Saanich's Asset Management Plans and Risk Registers.
As the area and the wider region densify, and the impacts of climate change intensify, Council members will be challenged on many fronts. Local governments are uniquely positioned to take a leading role on decisions related to land use, ecosystems and watersheds, low-pollution buildings and transport, and waste reduction policies. These can have clear benefits for people and nature, as together we create a more prosperous and just society.
Where do candidates stand on these topics? This survey of mayoral and council candidates addresses issues of potential interest and concern to the electorate related to climate change and adaptation, the environment, and sustainability.
This election is critical, and who we elect will shape the future of our community for decades to come. You can learn more about these and other community issues at one or more of the following all candidates’ sessions:

Voting tip
When you vote, only vote for the candidates you want elected. If that is one mayor and five councillors, only put down those names.
