Why is climate action important?

Climate change is already harming our communities

Communities across British Columbia are already experiencing the harmful impacts of climate change caused by fossil fuel pollution, such as extreme heat, drought, wildfires, severe storms, floods, and sea level rise.

Climate change is expensive

Climate change is increasing food costs, insurance premiums, and energy bills, as the costs of recovering from climate disasters are passed on to customers. Taxes also go up to pay to repair public infrastructure such as roads, bridges, and buildings damaged by severe weather.

We need to future-proof our communities

We need to take steps to prepare our communities for future climate disasters to protect ourselves and our neighbours, keep everyone safe, ensure food and water security, improve energy security, and keep critical infrastructure working.

Investing in climate action saves us money

By investing in climate action we can reduce energy and transportation costs, develop more sustainable economies and jobs, become better environmental stewards, protect ecosystems and biodiversity, reduce pollution, improve human health and well-being, and enhance our quality of life. Climate action has clear benefits for people and nature, as together we create a more prosperous, just, and equitable society.

Every $4 dollars invested in climate action now will save $8.6 dollars in future costs and is the most fiscally responsible choice. Let's build for the future, not the past.

We need to Vote4Tomorrow

Local governments are uniquely positioned to take a leading role on climate action as decisions on land use, buildings, transport, and waste are largely controlled at the local level.
