Issues for Delta
Where do candidates stand on environment and climate?
This election is critical, and who we elect will shape the future of Delta for decades to come. We engaged with candidates, and asked them to complete a questionnaire to find out where they stand on climate and environmental policies we care about.
To decide for yourself, go to the candidates page and click on the individual candidates to find out where they stand.
Why we need to elect climate leaders
Climate action has many co-benefits for communities, and provides an opportunity to achieve energy security, develop more sustainable economies and jobs, become better environmental stewards, protect ecosystems and biodiversity, reduce pollution, improve human health and well-being, and enhance our quality of life. Climate action has clear benefits for people and nature, as together we create a more prosperous, just, and equitable society.
Local governments are uniquely positioned to take a leading role on climate action as decisions on land use, buildings, local transport, and waste are largely controlled at the local level.
In Delta we are also facing a triple threat to our quality of life, from multiple projects. A very large expansion of the Roberts Bank Terminal, the Tillbury LNG expansion and potentially a bitumen pipeline through our community with a storage tank on the salish sea at Roberts Bank. What will our air quality be like in 5-10 years, imagine all of these trucks and tankers polluting our air and oceans? What about our cost of living, once again we are facing a gas crisis, which impacts the costs of everything from food to transportation. Why would we double down on this resource, when a transition to clean, renewable energy in our buildings and transportation in particular, would free us and have the benefit of contributing to a healthy planet at the same time?
The next elected council will have the responsibility of working with all levels of government to help protect our communities, and address the very real impacts we are facing.
We asked candidates to commit to climate actions as quickly as possible to help provide these benefits for our children and grandchildren.
How did we designate climate leaders?
To be designated as a climate leader, candidates needed to commit to more than 80% of the climate policies and commit to have Delta join with other communities to Sue Big Oil to recover the cost of the damage to our communites and provide the funds for us to prepare for the future.

Voting tip
When you vote, only vote for the candidates you want elected. If that is one mayor and five councillors, only put down those names. For council, the top candidates with the most votes are elected, so if you vote for someone that you don't really want elected, that may bump your preferred candidates off the list.
