About

I grew up in Revelstoke and love this community. I retired in 2021 from a 40 year career with the federal public service, and am actively involved in a number of local non-profit organizations.

Ecosystems

The air we breathe, the water we drink, and the food we eat all rely on healthy ecosystems. Nature can also help protect our community from extreme weather by controlling floods, protecting shorelines, and cooling neighbourhoods. Access to nature improves the health and well-being of residents, and supports biodiversity.

Climate action

How have you contributed to climate action in your community through advocacy, past work, advisory committees, volunteer work, and/or reducing your personal carbon footprint?
Throughout my career with Parks Canada I participated in a number of climate action initiatives, green house gas reduction, green procurement, equipment retrofit for emissions reduction as a few examples. On a personal level, I have actively rebuilt a 1951 home, retrofitting the building to ensure it meets efficiency standards and Step Code for BC.
I see a number of the questions in this questionnaire more applicable to Provincial legislation, and therefore have indicated a neutral response. Recognising the limitation of municipal authority, I believe we would attempt to influence rather than enact policy.

Questions for Revelstoke

What actions will you take to better prepare the City of Revelstoke to mitigate, adapt and respond to the impacts of climate change and biodiversity loss, including in areas of food security, land-use, water consumption, and wildfires?
This is a big question. The work to prepare Revelstoke involves relying on the expertise of city staff and the Environmental Advisory Committee, supported by Provincial and Federal initiatives, in order to develop an appropriate strategic approach for Revelstoke in these areas.
What will be your approach to working with and empowering governance committees, including the Environmental Advisory Committee, and to improving community involvement in decision-making for the Revelstoke Community Forest Corporation?
I believe these committees need to be used as they were intended, to provide advise and guidance and more specifically recommendations to the City of Revelstoke to help inform decision making. The members of these committees possess an expertise in their fields that can be of significant benefit to the City.
How can the City of Revelstoke better support reconciliation and collaborate with Indigenous Nations?
The Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act sets the standard for the Province of BC and provides a blueprint for how municipalities should collaborate with First Nations. I think a review of the applicable Action Plan items would be an excellent starting point.
What role should the City of Revelstoke play in supporting a resilient local food system?
Food security is in everyone's interest. The City of Revelstoke should be supporting initiatives with the provision of leased land and letters of support for funding program applications.
Bears are closely tied to Revelstoke’s identity and tourism messaging. What responsibility does the City have to ensure that this identity is backed by meaningful action and investment in human–wildlife coexistence?
Actions should support co-existence in the community. Bear proof garbage bins and residential/commercial curb-side composting program should set the standard. Education is critical, requiring a solution to the continuation of Bear Aware education, in light of the discontinuation of Provincial funding.
How will you ensure that Revelstoke’s tourism growth is sustainable, reflective of community priorities, and balances the need for housing that is affordable and climate resilient?
Through collaboration with stakeholders like Tourism Revelstoke and RMR. Build on progress that has been made in Revelstoke to develop staff accommodation and continue to support investment in quality affordable housing developments, managed by the Revelstoke Community Housing Society.
