Policy commitments

Buildings

We all want healthy, affordable, and comfortable homes. These policies will help to lower energy bills, cut pollution, and improve indoor air quality.

✓ Support electrification of new buildings. Supportive
✓ Implement a 'right to cool' bylaw to protect tenants during extreme heat events. Supportive
Ecosystems

The air we breathe, the water we drink, and the food we eat all rely on healthy ecosystems. Nature can also help protect our community from extreme weather by controlling floods, protecting shorelines, and cooling neighbourhoods. Access to nature improves the health and well-being of residents, and supports biodiversity.

✓ Expand and protect tree canopy, parks, and green infrastructure to cool neighbourhoods, clean air, and manage stormwater. Supportive
✓ Create connected urban greenways for people and wildlife. Supportive
Land Use

We envision vibrant, walkable communities that protect nature and improve food security.

✓ Build affordable homes near jobs, schools, shops, and transit. Supportive
✓ Upgrade critical infrastructure for heat, fire, flood, and storm resilience. Supportive
Transport

Connecting neighbourhoods through public transit and active transportation networks will cut pollution, improve public health, and make our communities more affordable (and fun!).

✓ Deliver reliable, frequent, affordable local transit. Supportive
✓ Advocate to improve regional public transit between communities. Supportive
✓ Expand EV charging infrastructure. Supportive
Zero Waste

Zero waste policies reduce pollution, keep waste out of landfills, build resilient local economies, and safeguard public health by shifting society away from a disposable culture toward a sustainable circular economy.

✓ Implement bylaws to eliminate waste from new buildings, renovation, and demolition projects and to use existing buildings as efficiently as possible. Supportive

Climate action

How have you contributed to climate action in your community through advocacy, past work, advisory committees, volunteer work, and/or reducing your personal carbon footprint?
I introduced a tree protection bylaw for City Council a few years ago, and recently supported an expansion of that bylaw. I have joined community tree planting projects. I have advocated for cooling options for renters and condo owners. I ride an e-bike and own an all-electric car.

Questions for North Vancouver (City of)

Lonsdale Energy Company has often promised a carbon neutral pathway. What steps will you take to ensure this report is published in the next year?
Lonsdale Energy (LEC) reported publicly at Council this year outlining their progress and initiatives. I will support this type of Progress Report being be made public each year.
Expensive renewable natural gas (RNG) use was introduced as a temporary solution for Lonsdale Energy Company to decarbonize, but is now a permanent part of LEC's energy mix. What steps will you take to eliminate RNG from LEC's energy mix?
I will support LEC to continue moving to eliminate RNG from their energy mix.
What steps would you take to correct the taxes that residents must now pay due to Metro Vancouver's handling of the sewage treatment plant?
I have voted with my Council to challenge the tax burden being imposed on our taxpayers, and to demand a full public inquiry as to how the NSWWTP costs increased so rapidly. I have voted to have the tax burden reduced for North Shore taxpayers and financial assistance from senior governments.
What steps would you take to require retention of mature trees through land use planning or other tools.
I have long advocated for retention of mature trees and expanding the scope of the tree protection bylaw through whatever zoning or regulatory means.
Should the tree bylaw apply to ALL sites, even if the sites are not being re-developed?
Yes the tree bylaw should apply to all properties, and any removal request be carefully reviewed by planning staff and an arborist with new planting for any trees removed. Private property owners rights must be given fair consideration.
