Policy commitments

Buildings

We all want healthy, affordable, and comfortable homes. These policies will help to lower energy bills, cut pollution, and improve indoor air quality.

✓ Scale up energy retrofits for existing homes, businesses, and public buildings. Supportive
✓ Implement a 'right to cool' bylaw to protect tenants during extreme heat events. Supportive
Climate Justice

Our community is already experiencing the harmful impacts of climate change caused by fossil fuel pollution, and taxpayers are on the hook to upgrade and repair critical infrastructure.

✓ Enact a moratorium on AI data centres to protect our energy and water resources. Supportive
✓ Collaborate with Indigenous peoples as partners in the stewardship of the land, air, and water, and work towards reconciliation. Supportive
Ecosystems

The air we breathe, the water we drink, and the food we eat all rely on healthy ecosystems. Nature can also help protect our community from extreme weather by controlling floods, protecting shorelines, and cooling neighbourhoods. Access to nature improves the health and well-being of residents, and supports biodiversity.

✓ Protect and restore ecosystems, which are essential to human survival, health, and economic well-being. Supportive
Land Use

We envision vibrant, walkable communities that protect nature and improve food security.

✓ Upgrade critical infrastructure for heat, fire, flood, and storm resilience. Supportive
Transport

Connecting neighbourhoods through public transit and active transportation networks will cut pollution, improve public health, and make our communities more affordable (and fun!).

✓ Advocate to improve regional public transit between communities. Supportive
Watersheds

Climate change, increasing populations, and overconsumption threaten our water security. Healthy watersheds and forests are critical to support clean drinking water, stormwater management, climate resilience, and biodiversity for future generations.

✓ Protect and restore watersheds as vital municipal infrastructure. Supportive
Zero Waste

Zero waste policies reduce pollution, keep waste out of landfills, build resilient local economies, and safeguard public health by shifting society away from a disposable culture toward a sustainable circular economy.

✓ Support the development of a circular economy to eliminate waste and improve resilience. Supportive

Climate action

How have you contributed to climate action in your community through advocacy, past work, advisory committees, volunteer work, and/or reducing your personal carbon footprint?
Personally I have volunteered with the Greater Victoria Green Team. As an incumbent have worked towards addressing climate and environmental issues. these can be seen in the work we have done this term to create a Climate Action Plan, a first transportation (w/ active transit) plan with a focus on mode shift, a Refreshed OCP with a focus on complete communities, an Asset management plan that includes the importance of natural assets, a storm water management plan that incorporates the impact of rapid run off on wildlife and watersheds. On the professional side I focus a lot of my teaching curriculum on environmental economics, how to incentivize change, circular and sustainable economies.

Questions for Langford

Do you commit to support Langford's climate initiatives such as the Zero Carbon Step Code, making life more affordable (lower heating & cooling bills) and healthier & safer (more resilient against heat waves, methane pollution & smoky skies)?
Yes and we have already begun to take some massive steps towards this as mentioned above. My intent is to continue with the work and recommendations which were laid out in the plans we have created to date.
To what degree would you support the recovery of climate-change-related costs from polluters, to lessen the related burden on Langford’s taxpayers?
I truly believe that the failure to place a price on pollution is one of the leading reasons for the problems we are facing regarding the climate emergency. In that light I strongly support pollution pricing.
What would you do to help Langford implement and act on the Climate Action Plan that was presented by staff and the consultants on August 17th?
Being part of the council that identified the need for a climate action plan in our strategic plan, including identifying the impact climate has in the poly-crisis we are currently facing, I am extremely supportive of the work and recommendations which were presented to us.
Do you wish to clarify or add information? You may use this space (250 word limit).
I have been immensely proud of the work we have done this term. There are aspects that are frustratingly slow, and more that can always be done. I would be honoured to be trusted by the public to continue to this work and follow through on the plans and the path we have laid out before us.
